WITH THE SUN, VENUS, AND PLUTO in Virgo in his natal horoscope, it’s not surprising that filmmaker Carter Smith’s favorite genre of horror involves the mysteries of the human body. Smith lists David Cronenberg’s The Brood—a film where murderous beast children are hatched from the body of a woman undergoing radical psychotherapy—as a major influence on his filmmaking career.
After his first horror feature, Bugcrush won the Best Short Film category at the 2022 Sundance Festival, Smith went on to make five other films, most of them highlighting his love for body horror.
When not making movies for DreamWorks and Blumhouse, Smith is busy photographing all the naked guys he stylizes and transforms into spooky thugs for his evolving photo compilation All the Dead Boys.
