What an amazing article! You hit on so very many salient points- and captured the signs essence ( in my humble opinion) beautifully♋️🦀

Happy Cancer season and Solar Return to you 🌞

Hi Michelle

That's an ultra compliment that I was able to wrangle the crab into a set of pointers.

And thank you for the bday wishes.

Too true- I’m a double Capricorn (Sun and Rising) with a strong Moon in Cancer in an angular house

I’ve also been in relationships with 3 Cancer Men (of course :) and pondered this sign’s expression most of my adult life- especially in Men.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a better sense of it anywhere than this….

A great read. Happy solar return to you. Another fine example of Cancer is the gnostic Sophia. What also comes to mind is the anima. And like animas of so many, it is a hard shell to crack, but persistence pays off with wisdom and integration. Thanks again.

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hi Craig

Yes, great reminder, the Gnostic Sophia. And yes, the anima. All the water signs have an affiliation with that psychic condition. Thank you for your comment.

Frederick,

Love this!! Thank you! (Cancer moon here!😉)

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hi Sasan. Cancer Moon works, too! Thank you for your comment.

Frederick! This is a brilliant piece. I devoured it. For this double Gemini, Aqua rising with Mercury in Cancer, there is so much you’ve pondered and pieced together that dovetails with and sheds light on some of the gaps in my own ponderings about the split between matter and spirit and how spirit is transformed in the physical body (such a cancerian thing), but how messed up that relationship is culturally. Lately, I’ve been wrestling with my incorrigible propensity to attempt to live so many of my imaginings that my body is forever begging me to just stop!

2 of my sisters have Cancer moons and I was married to a Cancer rising man for almost 30 years and while I recognize the traits you write about in them, your point of view helps me so much to understand their internal experience. Thank you.

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hi Camille, wow, such a meaty comment. Thank you.

And yes, Cancer as Mother, and matter--all of that alchemy is contained within the sign's many processess--grounded ultimately in the body.

Camille Sheppard's avatar

Now if you can talk my Gemini and Aquarius parts into believing it, that’d be a neat trick.

I love what you bring to the conversation about astrology. It’s a unique perspective. I tend to think psychologically but wanted to understand why I was saying what I was saying. I felt like I was just “making shit up” so I learned Hellenistic. It’s been a good discipline for my Gemini/ADHD tendency to look at too many shiny balls in charts. But I’m a better astrologer when I’m guided into a chart by my intuition and then apply structures I’ve learned. Reading your column has helped me better understand my own process. Keep it up! I also love your conversations about mundane astrology!

Merci !!! I will read again, Cancer ascendant here with south node and Jupiter in Cancer. Mom and artist. Wishing you a Happy solar return ! Bonne Fête ! x

Thank you for the greetings, Louise! Appreicate it and your presence here!

You've written a rich paean to an underrated, misunderstood sign. I'm glad you charge for your work!

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hey Monica

Thank you for this. This post was originally for my paying subbers like you, but on second thought (and for the crabs everywhere) I knew I had to keep it open to all.

May it lure some invited guests in! ☺️

"I think I’ve been working on pulling the ideas together here for over six months. This is why I charge people to read my work. The process of nailing the syntax down nearly kills me." AKA a creative giving birth! Loved every word and will read a few times to truly absorb. Also, Frederick...the art at top of article is absolutely stunning. What is it from?? And...agreed about your take on Hellensitic/trad astrology!

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hi Bobbe

This is what drives me nuts about the internet and the rampant theft everwhere when it comes to creative work (doubly so now in the AI world). I discovered that old painting on a tumblr account I follow (and natch, no attribution). I tried a reverse search on Google Image, and nada. Furthermore, I always credit art that I feature here, I should have made a note on this one that there was no finable attribution. Thank you for your comment.

Vivian Robson was a man, not a woman.

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

LOL! Figures, another clueless dude writing about the sign.

This is a piece I'll return to for a second read. You've packed so much to think about in relation to not only the sign, but to the always-on dichotomy of opposites. Bravo! Fred

Well written and with the Crabs association with the Ocean, consider your self a Golden South Sea Pearl or the priceless Tahitian Black Pearl. 🎈

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hi Janet,

Thank you for the comment and such a magical image to meditate on. I'm going to go with the Tahitian Black Pearl (says my Moon in Scorpio) :-)

Frederick, your talents and gifts are immensely gorgeous. Only you can juxtapose mitochondria DNA, haplotype origins, and astrology together so poignantly.

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Thank you Malia! I'm happy to know you found the essay entertaining.

Everyone else has already said it…!

Thank you for writing it ✨

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Thank you Cintra! Appreciate your nod, nonetheless.

Yes, what everyone said! But I would add that this article did NOT seem "dashed off"! I too will be re-reading it to help my ponderings about what you have addressed.

Personally, I have no placements in Cancer, and the sign itself is intercepted in the 8th house, opposite Capricorn Moon and Jupiter. It has always felt enigmatic to me, who "should" understand it better with Pisces Sun and Scorpio rising. Thanks!!!

Frederick Woodruff's avatar

Hi Joanna, thank you so much for your kind words.

I am thankful the six months of creative labor. Also in awe of the many endeavor you have poured into your life. I want to see that childrens' TV show, I want to eat some pastry. I will join you in the garden. After that I do not have the stamina to keep up. This piece bring to mind some of the good writing in SECRETS OF A TELEPHONE PSYCHIC. (I finally picked up a copy)
