This was an interesting conversation with connections drawn between things that I’ve not seen before. I have a question: I heard Travis say don’t trade work for exposure, and I agree. And you and Travis also talked about how so many people, including astrologers (at NORWAC and elsewhere) are selling subscriptions to gain access. These two perspectives are like an opposition…so where, in your opinion is the balance or release?
Hello Sharon! Thank you for seeking clarity here. I didn’t mean to set up an opposition between “don’t work for exposure” and “subscriptions are bad.” What I was trying to point to was the way some astrologers frame subscription models as “community,” when it’s really a strategy for gaining followers or subscribers.
I’m very much in favor of subscriptions when they’re about supporting real labor. My concern is the erosion of actual community when the language of community gets used as a marketing move. That’s where things start to feel extractive instead of relational.
So for me the balance is honesty. Charge for your work, just don’t package it as collective care if it’s really a business model. That’s the release point I was trying to articulate. Always happy to discuss this further!
I’m so glad you said “we don’t f**ing know” when it comes to understanding or interpreting what the outcomes will be based on historical data. It is an insult to nature and the cosmos!

This resonated hugely on so many levels. I loved that line about making the mistake of accepting exposure as currency - I also interpreted it as a warning not to blindly follow the influencers…. And yes, God yes, to the straight talk about people reduced to being producers rather than practising their art. As a poet sitting out here in the bush, talking to the rocks and the dragons, I feel pushed to post and then think - who the hell am I doing this for? What a revelation to forge ahead just for me.
